Candy was a small white puppy with fluffy fur as soft as cotton.
She had just turned two years old.
Once, her coat was bright and beautiful, but months of living on the streets had left it stained with dirt. Small scratches covered her legs, and patches of dried mud clung to her fur.
Still, Candy remained the sweetest little dog.
She greeted every stranger with a hopeful wag of her tail, believing that maybe today someone would notice her.
But today was special.
It was her second birthday.
No one knew.
No one remembered.
Candy woke up in the narrow alley she called home. Her bed was nothing more than a cold slab of concrete beside an old brick wall. She stretched, shook the dust from her fur, and quietly began another day searching for food.
She wandered through busy streets, sniffing around cafés and restaurants.
The smell of roasted chicken, bread, and sweet pastries filled the air.
Her stomach growled.
She hadn’t eaten since yesterday.
As the afternoon sun began to set, Candy walked past a beautiful house with floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
She suddenly stopped.
Inside, another little dog was celebrating its birthday.
The living room was filled with colorful balloons.
Children laughed happily as they placed a tiny birthday hat on the dog’s head.
A beautiful cake sat on the table with glowing candles.
Everyone clapped and smiled.
The birthday dog barked excitedly while its family sang together.
Candy quietly sat outside the window.
She didn’t bark.
She didn’t scratch the glass.
She simply watched.
Her little nose rested gently against the window.
For a few precious minutes, she imagined what it might feel like if someone sang for her.
If someone gently placed a birthday hat on her head.
If someone whispered,
“Happy Birthday, Candy.”
But those wishes belonged only to her imagination.
After the celebration ended, Candy slowly stood up and walked away.
She knew none of it belonged to her.
As evening arrived, she searched through a pile of garbage behind a nearby bakery.
Most of it was empty boxes, old newspapers, and plastic bags.
Then she noticed something colorful.
Buried beneath the trash was a small birthday hat.
It was bent and slightly dirty.
Someone had thrown it away after a party.
Candy carefully picked it up with her mouth.
To everyone else, it was just another piece of garbage.
To Candy, it was the only birthday gift she would receive.
She carried the little hat all the way back to the narrow alley where she slept.

The walk felt longer than usual.
Her tired paws ached.
But she never let the little hat fall.
When she finally reached her sleeping place, she gently placed it beside her.
After staring at it for a long moment, she nudged it onto her fluffy head.
It leaned slightly to one side.
It looked a little silly.
But Candy didn’t care.
For one brief moment…
She pretended someone had given it to her with love.
The night grew colder.
The city lights slowly disappeared.
Candy curled herself into a tiny ball on the cold concrete.
The little birthday hat rested beside her head.
Above her, the stars quietly filled the sky.
No birthday cake.
No candles.
No presents.
No family.
Only a lonely little puppy… and a discarded birthday hat she treasured more than anything.
Yet before closing her eyes, Candy gently wagged her tail one last time.
Because even after everything she had lost…
She still believed that somewhere in this enormous world…
Someone was looking for a dog just like her.
Someone who would one day say,
“Happy Birthday, Candy.”
And never let her spend another birthday alone.
