A Mother Who Could Not Understand Why Her Babies Were Gone
In Suzhou, Anhui Province, China, a mother dog experienced a loss she could not explain and seemingly could not bring herself to leave behind. Two of her newborn puppies had died following complications around the time of their birth, and after their tiny bodies were buried, it might have seemed that the heartbreaking chapter had come to an end. But for their mother, it had not. She continued returning to the shallow grave, drawn back again and again to the place where her babies had disappeared beneath the earth. According to her owner, Mr. Qin, she dug through the soil and retrieved the puppies as many as five or six times, refusing to remain separated from the newborns she had only just brought into the world.
There was no way to explain to her what had happened. No words could tell her why the puppies were no longer nursing, why they no longer moved when she touched them, or why the humans around her kept placing them somewhere she could not reach. Whatever she understood about death, her behavior showed one thing clearly: something inside her continued telling her to stay close to her babies. Each time they were buried, she returned. Each time the earth separated them, she dug until she could reach them again. It was as though the instincts that had prepared her to protect, clean, nurse, and carry her newborns had nowhere to go after they were suddenly gone.
She Dug Through the Earth to Reach Them Again
Footage of the mother shows her beside the shallow burial site, pawing through the disturbed soil until the tiny bodies of her puppies are exposed once more. Instead of walking away after finding them, she remains close, repeatedly licking them in the same gentle way a mother might tend to her living newborns. To anyone watching, the scene is difficult to forget. The puppies do not respond, but their mother continues to touch and attend to them, seemingly unwilling to accept the distance that burial had placed between them.
Mr. Qin reportedly tried several times to bury the puppies again, yet the mother kept returning. Five or six times, according to his account, she found her way back and brought them out. Perhaps she was responding purely to maternal instinct. Perhaps she was confused by their stillness and continued trying to care for them. We cannot know exactly what was happening in her mind, and it would be impossible to translate her behavior perfectly into human emotions. But what could be seen was a mother repeatedly choosing proximity to the young she had recently lost. Whatever the reason, leaving them behind seemed to be something she simply could not yet do.
She Carried Her Puppy as Though It Still Needed Her Protection
One of the most moving moments shows the mother walking along a road with one of the tiny puppies carefully held in her mouth. There is nothing careless about the way she carries the motionless newborn. Her grip is gentle and deliberate, resembling the instinctive way mother dogs transport their puppies from one place to another when they believe their babies need to be moved somewhere safer. Step after step, she carries the puppy with her, as though some part of her is still fulfilling the responsibility that began the moment she gave birth.
At another point, Mr. Qin stays beside her, gently stroking and comforting her while she holds the puppy. When he attempts to take the little body from her mouth, she appears reluctant to let go. Eventually, he carefully removes the puppy and holds it in his hand, but the mother remains nearby. The scene is quiet, yet that quietness makes it even harder to watch. There is no dramatic struggle and no way for her to ask what has happened. There is simply a mother standing beside the tiny life she had expected to nurture, seemingly still compelled to remain close even though there was nothing she could do to bring her baby back.
Her Instinct to Be a Mother Did Not Disappear With Her Puppies
Animals cannot tell us how they experience loss, and we should be careful not to assume their emotions are identical to our own. Yet maternal attachment in dogs can be remarkably strong, particularly around the time of birth, when a mother’s behavior becomes intensely focused on protecting and caring for her litter. For this dog, those instincts did not simply disappear when two of her puppies died. Her repeated digging, licking, carrying, and remaining close to their bodies showed a persistence that touched people who saw the footage.
Perhaps the most heartbreaking part is that she seemed to continue doing everything a mother was supposed to do. She found her babies when they were hidden beneath the soil. She cleaned them. She carried them gently. She stayed beside them. These were actions meant to protect vulnerable newborn lives, yet now they could change nothing. The very instincts designed to keep her puppies alive appeared to keep drawing her back to babies she could no longer save.
There Was No Way to Tell Her It Was Time to Say Goodbye
Humans have rituals for loss. We have words, explanations, funerals, and people who can sit beside us and help us understand that someone is gone. This mother had none of those things. She could not be told why her puppies had stopped moving. She could not understand why they were being placed beneath the ground. All she could do was respond to what her senses and instincts told her, and again and again, that response brought her back to them.
The fate of any other puppies from the litter was unclear from the information available, but the bond between this mother and the two newborns she lost was impossible to overlook. Her story was not heartbreaking because we can say with certainty exactly what she was thinking; we cannot. It was heartbreaking because of what she continued to do. Even after the puppies were buried, even after she was taken away from them, she kept returning to the same patch of earth and searching until she found them.

No amount of licking could make them move again. Carrying them somewhere else could not make them safe. Digging through the earth could not undo the tragedy that had taken them from her. And perhaps that is why her story has stayed with so many people. It reminds us that the bonds animals form with their young are not something we should dismiss simply because they cannot describe them to us. We may never know exactly what this mother understood about the loss of her puppies, but we know what the footage showed: she searched for them, dug for them, licked them, carried them, and stayed beside them.
She had brought those tiny lives into the world expecting to care for them.
