That afternoon, the narrow road running beside the railroad tracks was almost completely empty.
An old black-and-white dog slowly walked along the roadside. His body was so thin that the outline of his bones could be seen beneath his rough fur. He wore an old blue shirt, torn in several places, perhaps the only thing keeping him warm during the cold nights he spent outside.
No one knew how long he had been wandering.
No one knew who had once put that shirt on him.
He simply kept walking with his head lowered, occasionally stopping near trash bags in search of something to eat.
Then suddenly—
“Help me!”
A weak cry came from somewhere ahead.
The old dog immediately lifted his head.
His ears perked up.
He looked toward the railroad crossing and started running.
In the middle of the tracks, an elderly man with gray hair was sitting in a wheelchair.
One of the wheels had become tightly wedged in the gap beside the rail.
The old man pushed the wheel with both hands.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
But the wheelchair would not move.
Then a sound echoed in the distance.
A sound that made the old man’s face turn pale.
A train horn.
A train was approaching.
The old man desperately looked around.
“Somebody help me!”
No one answered.

The road was completely deserted.
Except for the old dog.
The dog ran straight toward the wheelchair.
At first, the old man thought the animal was simply passing by.
But the dog moved behind the wheelchair.
He raised his thin body onto his hind legs, placed both front paws against the back of the chair, and pushed.
The wheelchair shook.
But the trapped wheel did not come free.
The train horn sounded again.
This time, much closer.
“Go!”
The old man shouted at the dog.
“Run away!”
But the dog refused to leave.
He pushed again.
His old hind legs trembled under the strain.
One paw slipped, sending his frail body falling onto the ground.
The old man looked toward the approaching train, then back at the dog lying beside him.
For a moment, he thought it was over.
But seconds later—
the old dog stood up again.
He placed both front paws against the wheelchair one more time.
This time, he lowered his head and pushed with everything he had.
The torn blue shirt stretched across his skinny back.
The wheelchair moved.
Just a little.
Then a little more.
The sound of metal wheels grinding against the tracks grew louder.
The old man pushed his wheels with both hands while the dog continued forcing the chair forward from behind.
Then suddenly—
the trapped wheel popped free.
The wheelchair rolled forward.
But the dog still did not stop.
Keeping his front paws pressed against the chair, he continued pushing the old man toward the dirt beside the tracks.
One meter.
Two meters.
Three.
And just as the wheelchair cleared the tracks—
the train thundered past behind them.
The powerful rush of air whipped the old dog’s torn blue shirt against his body.
The elderly man squeezed his eyes shut.
He knew that if they had been only a few seconds slower…
he would not have survived.
When the final train car disappeared into the distance, everything became quiet again.
The old man slowly turned around.
The black-and-white dog stood behind the wheelchair.
He was panting heavily.
All four legs were trembling.
Then, exhausted, he slowly collapsed onto the ground.
The elderly man leaned forward and reached out a wrinkled hand.
“Come here…”
The dog lifted his head and looked at him.
Perhaps it had been a very long time since anyone had spoken to him with such kindness.
Slowly, the dog stood.
Step by step, he approached the wheelchair.
Then he gently rested his head on the old man’s knee.
The man stroked the dog’s rough black-and-white fur and looked at the torn blue shirt covering his thin body.
His eyes filled with tears.
“You saved my life.”
The dog simply closed his eyes.
His tired tail tapped the ground once.
After that day, people no longer saw the old dog wandering beside the railroad tracks.
Because the elderly man took him home.
He washed the old blue shirt but refused to throw it away.
Instead, he carefully stitched every torn section and hung it beside the dog’s new bed.
Within a few weeks, the old dog began gaining weight.
His coat became cleaner and softer.
And every afternoon, people in the neighborhood began seeing something new.
An elderly man slowly traveling down the road in his wheelchair…
with an old black-and-white dog walking faithfully beside him.
That day, a homeless dog saved a man’s life.
But perhaps the dog never realized that…
the man had saved the rest of his life too.
