That afternoon, the road along the hillside was unusually quiet.
An elderly woman with silver hair was slowly making her way downhill in her wheelchair after buying a few groceries from a nearby store.
She had traveled this road many times before.
But that day, something suddenly felt wrong.
The wheelchair began rolling faster.
She immediately squeezed the brakes.
Nothing happened.
She tried again.
Still nothing.
“No… no…”
Her hands began to shake as she pulled the brake levers as hard as she could.
The brakes had failed.
Within seconds, the wheelchair was racing down the steep hill.
The wind rushed against her face as she struggled to keep the chair pointed straight.
“Help!”
“Somebody, please help me!”
But the road was nearly empty.
At the bottom of the hill was a busy intersection.
If the wheelchair kept gaining speed, she would have no way to stop herself before reaching the traffic.
Not far away, beside the road, a thin white stray dog was lying beneath a tree.
His once-white fur was dirty and matted.
Several scratches covered his back and legs.
One of his paws was injured, causing him to limp whenever he walked.

He looked exhausted.
Like he had been surviving on the streets for a very long time.
Then he heard the woman screaming.
The dog immediately lifted his head.
He saw the wheelchair speeding down the hill.
He saw the elderly woman desperately trying to stop it.
Without hesitation, the dog jumped to his feet and ran.
His injured leg made every step painful.
He stumbled slightly each time his paw touched the ground.
But the wheelchair was moving farther away.
So he ran faster.
The elderly woman looked behind her and saw the dog chasing her.
“No!”
“Stay back!”
She was afraid he would get hurt too.
But the dog refused to stop.
The distance between them grew smaller.
Five meters.
Three meters.
Then only one.
The dog finally reached the back of the wheelchair.
At first, he tried pushing against the side of the chair with his body.
It did nothing.
The wheelchair kept rolling.
The dog ran beside it for a few more seconds.
Then suddenly, he jumped forward and clamped his teeth around one of the handles on the back of the wheelchair.
He dug his hind legs into the pavement.
His thin body was dragged forward.
His paws scraped against the road.
The wheelchair slowed slightly.
But not enough.
The busy intersection was getting closer.
A car sped across the road ahead.
The elderly woman saw the traffic and closed her eyes.
“Please…”
The dog still refused to let go.
His injured paw slipped.
For a moment, he nearly fell.
But somehow, he regained his footing.
He lowered his body even closer to the ground.
His back legs pushed hard against the pavement.
His jaws remained locked around the handle.
He pulled.
Once.
The wheelchair slowed a little more.
He pulled again.
His entire body trembled from exhaustion.
Three meters remained.
Then two.
Then one.
Finally—
the wheelchair stopped just before the edge of the road.
A truck passed through the intersection only seconds later.
The elderly woman sat frozen in her chair.
Her hands were still gripping the armrests.
She could barely believe she was alive.
Behind her, the dog slowly released the handle.
He took two weak steps.
Then collapsed onto the ground.
His chest rose and fell rapidly.
His injured leg shook from the effort.
The woman slowly turned around.
When she saw the dog lying there, tears filled her eyes.
“Oh, sweetheart…”
She reached one trembling hand toward him.
“Come here.”
The dog opened his eyes.
For a moment, he simply stared at her hand.
Perhaps it had been a very long time since anyone had spoken to him so gently.
Slowly, he stood.
Limping with every step, he walked toward the wheelchair.
Then he gently rested his head on the woman’s lap.
She stroked his dirty white fur.
When she noticed the scratches covering his thin body, her tears finally fell.
“You were already hurt…”
“And you still ran after me.”
The dog could not answer.
He simply closed his eyes as her hand moved softly over his head.
A passerby eventually stopped to help and called the woman’s family.
But the story did not end there.
The next morning, the elderly woman asked her son to help her find the dog again.
They took him to a veterinary clinic.
His wounds were cleaned.
His injured leg was bandaged.
And for the first time in days, he was given a warm, full meal.
When the veterinarian asked whether they wanted to take him to a shelter, the woman shook her head.
“No.”
She looked down at the white dog resting beside her wheelchair.
“He’s coming home with me.”
Over the next few weeks, the dog slowly changed.
He began gaining weight.
His wounds healed.
His white coat became clean and soft again.
And every afternoon, the elderly woman would sit outside her home in her wheelchair.
Right beside her, the white dog would lie peacefully at her feet.
Sometimes she would lean down, stroke his head, and smile.
That day, a homeless dog used the little strength he had left to save an elderly woman’s life.
But he never realized that by saving her…
he had also found the home he had been waiting for.
