The white mother dog was lying beside her newborn puppies near the railroad tracks.
They had only just been born. Some still had their umbilical cords attached, and their tiny bodies could barely crawl across the dirt.
Their mother was exhausted, but she stayed pressed close to them, keeping them warm.
Then suddenly, she lifted her head.
Her ears stood straight up.
A low sound was coming from somewhere far down the tracks.
At first, it was faint.
Then the ground began to tremble.
The mother dog stared into the distance.
A train was coming.
She immediately looked back at her puppies.
None of them could run.
None of them could even understand the danger.
Instead of leaving them behind, the mother lowered her head and began pushing each puppy closer together with her nose.
One puppy had crawled slightly away from the others.
She pushed it back.
Another was lying near the edge of the rail bed.
She moved that one closer too.
The shaking became stronger.
Then the train appeared in the distance.
It was moving fast.
The mother dog looked at the train, then back at her babies.
For a few seconds, she seemed unsure what to do.
Then she slowly stood up.
Her body was still weak from giving birth, but she positioned herself beside the puppies and began barking toward the road.
A man driving nearby heard the barking.
At first, he continued past.
Then he noticed the dog standing dangerously close to the tracks.
He stopped his vehicle and ran toward her.
That was when he saw the newborn puppies.
The train was already getting close.
The man quickly pulled off his jacket and spread it on the ground.
He picked up the puppies one by one and placed them inside it.
The mother dog barked and circled around him nervously, never taking her eyes off her babies.
There were only seconds left.
The man gathered the jacket around the puppies and lifted them into his arms.
Then he ran away from the tracks.
The mother dog followed immediately.
Moments later, the train thundered past the exact spot where they had been lying.
The wind and noise were so strong that the mother dog crouched beside the man, trembling.
But every puppy was safe.
The man took the entire family home and placed them in a warm, quiet room.
He gave the mother dog water and food, then arranged clean blankets for the puppies.
For the first time since they were found beside the tracks, the mother finally relaxed.
She lay down, pulled her babies close, and rested her head beside them.
That night, all of the puppies were still alive.
And their mother finally closed her eyes knowing she no longer had to protect them alone.
