The Stray Puppy Nobody Expected to Notice
When Joey was first found wandering alone on the streets of California, nobody knew where he had come from or how long he had been surviving by himself.
The young Weimaraner puppy was eventually picked up by Animal Control and brought into a local shelter, where staff quickly noticed something unusual about him.
One of his front paws was severely deformed.
At first glance, many people assumed the puppy had suffered a terrible injury.
But Joey had actually been born that way.
And sadly, disabilities like his often make rescue dogs much harder to adopt.
Yet despite everything stacked against him, Joey continued greeting people with excitement, wagging his tail happily as though the world had never given him a reason to stop trusting it.
The Birth Defect That Made Him Different
Not long after Joey arrived at the shelter, Kristina de la Cuesta from Northern California Weimaraner Rescue learned about him and immediately stepped in to help.
The moment she saw Joey, she knew there was something incredibly special about the puppy.
Veterinarians later confirmed Joey had a congenital birth defect called ectrodactyly, sometimes referred to as “lobster claw.”
Parts of the bones and digits in his paw never fully developed, leaving a noticeable cleft in his front leg.
But surprisingly, Joey never seemed bothered by it.
While he occasionally alternates between using the paw and lifting it while walking, he still runs freely, plays energetically, and zooms around like any other happy puppy.
In fact, according to his rescuers, Joey acts as though he has absolutely no idea he’s different from other dogs.
The Puppy Who Refused to Feel Broken
What makes Joey’s story so emotional is not his disability—
It’s his attitude toward life.
Despite being abandoned and facing challenges most puppies never experience, Joey wakes up every single day overflowing with joy.
He loves chasing other dogs through the grass.
He splashes happily through water whenever he gets the chance.
And after exhausting himself with playtime, the nearly 50-pound puppy insists on curling up directly in someone’s lap for cuddles.
“He’s a major cuddler,” Kristina explained. “He just wants to love and be loved.”
And perhaps the most heartbreaking part of all is knowing that while Joey sees himself as a completely normal puppy…
The world often sees only his disability first.
The Fear That Nobody Will Choose Him
Although Joey is currently safe inside a loving foster home, he is still waiting for the one thing he truly needs most:
A forever family.
Rescuers know finding the right home for a disabled dog can be incredibly difficult.
Many adopters become nervous when they hear words like “birth defect” or “special needs,” even when the dog is perfectly capable of living a happy life.
But Joey’s rescuers desperately hope someone will look beyond his paw and see the beautiful soul underneath.
Because Joey doesn’t need pity.
He simply needs understanding.
He needs people willing to let him enjoy life safely while respecting the limitations his condition may eventually create.
The Life Joey Dreams About
According to his foster team, Joey would thrive in a home where he can still explore, play, and experience adventures like any other young dog.
A soft grassy yard.
A beach to run beside the ocean.
Other dogs to play with.
And humans willing to laugh at his goofy zoomies before cuddling with him at the end of the day.
Rescuers explain that Joey may never need surgery or major intervention for his paw at all.
But because there’s always a possibility his condition could worsen as he ages, he needs a family committed to loving him through every stage of life.
Not wrapping him in bubble wrap.
Not treating him like he’s fragile.
Just loving him for exactly who he is.
A Puppy Who Still Believes in Happiness
Today, Joey continues waiting patiently for the forever family he deserves.
And even after everything he’s been through—being abandoned, ending up in a shelter, and living with a visible disability—he still greets every new day with excitement and love.
That’s what makes his story so powerful.
Joey doesn’t spend his life feeling sorry for himself.
He doesn’t focus on what’s different about him.
He simply runs, plays, cuddles, and loves with his whole heart.
As if he’s still completely convinced someone out there will eventually see him not as a “disabled dog”…
But as the perfect puppy he already is.
