When they learned surviving dogs were still trapped on the property, they intervened and pleaded with the farmer to surrender the remaining animals for emergency veterinary treatment.
For Phoenix, it was likely the very first act of compassion she had ever experienced from a human being.
And it saved her life.
The injured dog was rushed into medical care where veterinarians treated her burns and stabilized her breathing after severe smoke exposure.
Her rescuers originally named her “Guwon,” meaning salvation.
A fitting name for a dog who survived what should have killed her.

After receiving emergency treatment in South Korea, Phoenix’s story reached Humane World for Animals, an organization helping rescue dogs affected by the meat trade while also campaigning to end the industry entirely.
The group arranged for Phoenix to leave South Korea behind forever.
For the first time in her life, the scarred survivor boarded a flight not toward slaughter…
But toward hope.
She traveled all the way to Canada, where she arrived at a rehabilitation center near Montreal to begin learning something completely unfamiliar:
What it felt like to be safe.
The Woman Who Saw More Than Her Scars
It was there that a woman named Tanya Thibaudeau met Phoenix for the very first time.
While many people may have seen a traumatized dog covered in emotional and physical scars, Tanya saw something else entirely:

Perhaps the sweetest part of Phoenix’s new life came shortly afterward when Tanya adopted another dog—a Golden Retriever named Willow.
The two quickly became inseparable best friends.
Now, instead of spending her days trapped inside a cage waiting for slaughter, Phoenix spends her time running, playing, cuddling, and finally experiencing the joy every dog deserves.

But for Phoenix herself, the law came almost too late.
If not for one desperate rescue mission and one act of mercy from strangers who refused to let her die, her story could have ended very differently.
Instead, the dog once destined only for suffering now wakes up every morning inside a loving home in Canada beside her best friend Willow.
