Alone Beside the Tracks in the Bitter Cold
The freezing wind cut through Philadelphia that morning as snow and ice covered the ground near the Somerset Bridge Railroad tracks.
Most people hurried past the area trying to escape the brutal cold.
But beside the tracks, barely able to move anymore, lay a Basset Hound with the saddest eyes imaginable.
His body trembled violently from the freezing temperatures.

When veterinarians first examined the dog — later named Fred — the situation became terrifyingly clear.
Fred’s condition was critical.
His body temperature was so dangerously low it would not even register on the thermometer.
His pulse was faint.
His body was skeletal from starvation.
And tiny red spots across his gums revealed signs of severe illness happening inside his fragile body.
Rescuers later described the heartbreaking reality in the simplest words possible:

The Battle to Save Fred
The veterinary team immediately began emergency treatment.
Heating blankets surrounded his trembling body while warmed intravenous fluids slowly fought to bring life back into him.
Every movement had to be careful.
Every treatment had to happen slowly.
After being starved for so long, even feeding him too quickly could become dangerous.
