Two Brothers in the Rain

Late in the afternoon, the sky turned gray. The first heavy rain of the season poured down onto the busy street, washing dry leaves and pieces of trash into puddles along the roadside.

Underneath an old truck, two stray dogs curled up close to each other.

The older dog had faded golden-brown fur covered with dirt. His younger brother was smaller, with black-and-white fur and worried eyes.

They had never been given names.

People in the neighborhood only knew that wherever one of them went, the other always followed.

That morning, the two brothers had crossed the street to search for leftover food near the market.

Suddenly, a motorcycle came speeding toward them.

The brakes screeched loudly.

The younger dog managed to jump out of the way.

But his older brother was not fast enough.

The motorcycle struck one of his back legs.

He cried out in pain and fell beside the road.

The driver looked back for only a moment before speeding away.

The older dog lay motionless on the ground. His injured leg trembled, and no matter how hard he tried, he could not stand.

The younger dog immediately ran to him.

He gently licked his brother’s wound and pressed his little nose against his neck, as though he were saying:

“Don’t be afraid. I’m right here.”

Each time the older dog tried to stand and fell again, his younger brother moved closer so that he could lean against him.

Although he could not make the pain disappear, the younger dog refused to leave his brother alone.

That night, the rain became even heavier.

The two brothers dragged themselves beneath the narrow roof of a closed shop.

The younger dog was cold and shaking, but he pressed his body against his injured brother to keep him warm.

He barely slept throughout the night.

Whenever the older dog whimpered in pain, his younger brother woke up and gently licked his face to comfort him.

The next morning, the smell of fresh bread drifted from a nearby food stall.

The younger dog’s stomach growled with hunger.

He looked at his brother and then toward the stall.

Finally, he ran away.

However, only a few minutes later, he returned with half of an old piece of bread in his mouth. Someone had probably thrown it onto the ground.

He placed the bread in front of his injured brother and quietly sat beside him.

The older dog gently pushed the bread toward his younger brother.

But the younger dog pushed it back.

In the end, the two brothers shared it, eating one small bite at a time.

Three days passed.

The older dog’s injury became worse, and he could no longer stand at all.

Still, the younger dog never left his side.

During the day, he searched the streets for scraps of food.

At night, he always returned to sleep beside his brother.

Some days, larger dogs stole the food he had found.

Other days, people chased him away.

But no matter what happened, he always returned.

On the afternoon of the fourth day, a ten-year-old girl walked past the closed shop.

She saw the younger dog using his own body to protect his injured brother from the rain.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Mom,” she whispered, “that dog is hurt.”

Her mother stopped and slowly approached the two animals.

The younger dog immediately stood in front of his brother.

He growled softly.

He did not want to attack anyone.

He only wanted to protect the one family member he had left.

The woman gently placed a bowl of water on the ground and stepped back.

The younger dog watched her carefully.

His eyes were still filled with fear, but somewhere behind that fear was a small spark of hope.

A few minutes later, an animal rescue team arrived.

They carefully wrapped the injured dog in a warm blanket.

When they lifted him into the rescue van, his younger brother ran after them desperately.

He was terrified that they would take his brother away and leave him behind.

One of the rescuers opened the van door.

“Let him come too,” she said.

The younger dog immediately jumped inside and sat beside his brother.

Throughout the journey, he rested his small head against his brother’s shoulder, as though he were saying:

“Everything will be all right. We are still together.”

After several weeks of treatment, the older dog’s injured leg slowly began to heal.

On the first day he was able to stand by himself, he did not try to run.

Instead, he turned toward his younger brother and gently licked his forehead.

It was his way of saying thank you.

Not long afterward, a loving family decided to adopt both dogs.

In their new home, they were finally given names.

The older brother was called Lucky, and the younger one was called Hope.

Every afternoon, Lucky and Hope played together in a sunny garden. They ran across the grass, chased butterflies, and slept side by side in a warm bed.

People often said that a miracle had saved Lucky’s life.

But those who knew their story understood the truth.

That miracle was the love of his younger brother.

During the darkest days, when the whole world seemed to have turned away, Hope never left Lucky’s side—not even for a moment.

His loyalty, courage, and love kept his brother alive until help finally arrived.

And from that day forward, the two brothers never had to face hunger, fear, or loneliness again.
